Early History

In 1954, two brothers living in Augusta, Georgia decided that they wanted to build a vehicle that would improve the experience of traveling the fairway. These brothers, named Beverly and Billy Dolan, initially worked out of a one-room machine shop to produce golf carts for their local community. However, the carts quickly grew in popularity due to their affordability and ease of use. These were, of course, the first E-Z-GO® golf carts, and the brothers soon expanded their operations to produce more carts and sell to a broader audience. These crude early models (some of which were built using surplus airplane parts) soon gave way to better, more impressive golf carts. 
 

Later Developments

In 1960, the Dolan brothers sold E-Z-GO to Textron Inc., while remaining on the board. This acquisition helped E-Z-GO to expand its operations and compete with the other golf cart manufacturers that were cropping up all over the place. The years that followed saw plenty of innovation, including the company’s first gas-powered golf carts. 
 

E-Z-GO® Golf Carts Today

Today, E-Z-GO® golf carts are still manufactured in Augusta, Georgia, the same city that the company was founded in. However, the company has grown quite a lot since its days of producing models using spare B-17 parts. Modern manufacturing facilities and design methods produce innovative yet durable models with features like automatic parking brakes. E-Z-GO has even been presented with awards for innovation, such as having its facility chosen as one of Industry Week magazine’s top ten manufacturing plants in North America and receiving the Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence in 2009.
